Wheat, after all, has played a key role for humanity since prehistoric times. It has been grown in the Middle East since the 7th century BC.
Wheatis was painted by 46 AUD Visual Communication students as part of their class assignments in Professor Julia Townsend’s Foundation Studio, Basic Illustration, and 3D Illustration classes.
Working from the original design by Sara Bin Hendi,each student designed his/her own branch of wheat, and then illustration students decorated triangles with art deco or other abstract designs.
Two senior illustration students, Ayla Al Nayal and Inji Darwish, acted as the leaders of the project and created the name “Wheatis.” They chose the final color scheme, based on Egyptian colors, and gave feedback and critiques to the other Foundation and Illustration students on the details of their work. “We wanted it to be unique…something divided into different parts that we could all share. It was fun. Mohammed Armali for his side found that “It was an amazing project. I enjoyed working on it even though it took a lot of time. I enjoyed learning about the history of this project- how it started in Europe, etc. I think our horse is the best one in Dubai. I am proud of my wheat.”
